Empire of Austenasia

Acts of Parliament

Acts of Parliament are the primary legislation of the Empire - they cannot be repealed or amended except by subsequent Acts of Parliament. An Act of Parliament is first drafted by a Representative. It is then taken to a Parliament meeting where it is debated on, reworded if necessary and finally voted on. An Act needs a majority of votes to become law, with the Prime Minister holding the deciding vote in case of a tie.

After the House of Representatives has voted in favour of an Act, it goes to the Monarch (or, if appointed, the Counsellors of State), who, if he agrees with the proposed laws, gives Imperial Consent to the Act. An Act of Parliament can not become law without Imperial Consent. Under the Austenasian Constitution of 2008, Acts of Parliament were the only real form of national legislation - all Acts of Parliament passed under that Constitution can be seen here. With the enactment of the Austenasian Constitution of 2011, these old Acts were repealed, with new ones gradually being passed to replace them.
